How to use the compass
- Stand at the centre of your home, the Brahmasthan, to read the directions of rooms. To find the direction your entrance faces, stand just inside the main door, looking out.
- Hold your phone flat, screen up, at waist height, with its top edge pointing ahead.
- Calibrate first by moving the phone slowly in a figure of eight a few times.
- Keep away from metal furniture, appliances, wiring and steel beams, which can pull a phone compass off by many degrees.
- Take two or three readings from slightly different spots and use the average.
Phone compasses point to magnetic north and are usually accurate to within a few degrees. Each Vastu zone spans 22.5°, so a careful reading is enough for planning; for a purchase or construction decision, confirm with a physical compass or a site visit.

How the Vastu compass works
Vastu divides the compass into 16 zones of 22.5° each, measured clockwise from north. North itself is centred on 0°, so it runs from 348.75° to 11.25°, north-north-east from 11.25° to 33.75°, and so on round the circle. Each zone is linked with an element, a theme and the activities it suits best.
On a phone, this compass reads the device's orientation sensor, smooths the readings and shows the zone you are facing, with its element, ruling planet or deity, and the rooms and uses traditionally suited to it. On a computer, or a device without a sensor, you can set the direction by hand with the slider or the quick-direction buttons.
Directions in Vastu are read from the centre of the home, the Brahmasthan. The guide beside the compass explains how to take an accurate reading and how to avoid the magnetic interference that can affect any phone compass.

Frequently asked questions
Why doesn't the compass start on my iPhone?
iPhones ask for permission before a website can read motion and orientation. Tap "Use my phone's compass" and choose Allow. If you declined earlier, you can enable it in Safari's settings, or set the direction by hand.
How accurate is a phone compass?
Usually within a few degrees once calibrated, which is enough to identify a 22.5° zone. Metal, appliances and wiring can pull it off, so take readings away from them and compare two or three.
Should I use magnetic north or true north?
Most Vastu practice uses the magnetic compass, as this tool does. In India the difference between magnetic and true north is small, generally a degree or two.
My main door faces a less favoured direction. What now?
There is no need to worry. Many homes have entrances in every direction. A Vastu consultant can look at your full floor plan and suggest simple adjustments, when they are relevant.
