What is a Moon sign?
Your Moon sign, or Chandra rashi, is the sign the Moon occupied at the moment of your birth. In Vedic astrology it describes the mind and emotions, and it is the sign used for horoscopes and for transits such as Sade Sati.
The Moon moves through a sign in about two and a quarter days, so your date of birth matters most, and the time and place make the result precise. We calculate the Moon's sidereal position with the Lahiri ayanamsa.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my sign different from the one in Western astrology?
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, measured against the fixed stars, while Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons. The two are now about 24° apart (the ayanamsa), so many people find their Vedic sign is one sign earlier.
Which sign should I read for my horoscope?
Vedic horoscopes, including ours, are written for the Moon sign, so read the horoscope for the sign this calculator shows.
What if I don't know my exact time of birth?
Use the closest time you know. The Moon sign and nakshatra usually stay the same over a few hours, but the lagna changes roughly every two hours, so it is the most sensitive to time. An astrologer can help refine an uncertain birth time.
