What is Kundli matching?

Kundli matching, or Guna Milan, compares two birth charts before marriage. The Ashtakoota method looks at eight aspects of compatibility, called kootas, and gives up to 36 points in all.

It is worked out mainly from each person's Moon sign and nakshatra, so an accurate date, time and place of birth for both people matters.

The eight kootas of Guna Milan

The Ashtakoota method scores eight aspects of compatibility. Each koota carries more points than the one before, from 1 for Varna to 8 for Nadi.

  • What the score means

Below 18 is usually considered low, 18 to 24 average, 25 to 32 good and above 32 excellent. A score is a starting point, never the whole answer.

  • Moon sign and nakshatra

Every koota is read from the two Moons. That is why matching needs each person's birth time: the Moon changes nakshatra about once a day.

  • Nadi and Bhakoot dosha

The two kootas with the most points carry the best-known doshas. Classical texts list exceptions that cancel them, which we show with your result.

  • Manglik matching

Mars in certain houses is called Manglik. When both people are Manglik, the tradition sees it as balanced. Many other factors soften it too.

Frequently asked questions

Is a low score a reason to worry?

No. A lower score shows where more understanding may be needed and is a reason for a closer study of both charts, not a verdict. Many well-matched couples have moderate scores, and several doshas have well-known exceptions.

Why does the order of the two people matter?

The classical tables for Varna, Vashya and Gana are read with one chart in the groom's role and the other in the bride's, so swapping the order can change those three scores slightly. The other five kootas are symmetric.

What is Nadi dosha?

Nadi dosha arises when both people share the same nadi (Adi, Madhya or Antya). It is traditionally given close attention, and the texts list exceptions, such as the same Moon sign with different nakshatras, which we show when they apply.

What if I don't know my exact time of birth?

Use the closest time you know. The Moon sign and nakshatra usually stay the same over a few hours, but the lagna changes roughly every two hours, so it is the most sensitive to time. An astrologer can help refine an uncertain birth time.
