What is a Kundli?

A Kundli, also called a Janam Kundli, Janam Patri or birth chart, is a map of where the Sun, Moon and planets were at the exact moment and place you were born. Vedic astrologers use it to understand your nature, the timing of life events and the periods ahead.

To make one you need three things: your date of birth, your time of birth and your place of birth. The time matters most, because the ascendant changes roughly every two hours.

The 12 houses in a Kundli

A Kundli is divided into 12 houses (bhavas). Each one looks after a part of life, and the planets sitting in a house, or ruling it, shape how that area plays out.

The 12 houses, explained
  1. 1Tanu

    Self, body and personality

  2. 2Dhana

    Wealth, family and speech

  3. 3Sahaja

    Courage, siblings and communication

  4. 4Sukha

    Home, mother and comforts

  5. 5Putra

    Children, creativity and learning

  6. 6Shatru

    Health, daily work and obstacles

  7. 7Kalatra

    Marriage and partnerships

  8. 8Ayu

    Longevity, change and hidden matters

  9. 9Dharma

    Fortune, father and higher learning

  10. 10Karma

    Career, status and actions

  11. 11Labha

    Gains, income and friendships

  12. 12Vyaya

    Expenses, spirituality and foreign lands

  • Charts (vargas)

The Lagna chart (D1) is the main birth chart. Divisional charts zoom into one area of life, like the Navamsa (D9) for marriage and the Dasamsa (D10) for career. There are 16 in all, up to D60.

  • Dashas (planetary periods)

Dashas show which planet is shaping your life at any time. The Vimshottari system runs in a 120-year cycle, with each mahadasha split into antardashas and finer sub-periods.

  • Moon sign and nakshatra

Your Rashi is the sign the Moon was in at birth, and your nakshatra is one of 27 lunar mansions within it. Together they describe your mind and emotions, and set the start of your dasha cycle.

  • Doshas

Doshas such as Manglik, Kaal Sarp and Sade Sati are specific planetary patterns. They're common, often cancelled by other factors, and always worth reading in the context of the whole chart.

Frequently asked questions

What if I don't know my exact time of birth?

Use the closest time you know. The Moon sign and nakshatra usually stay the same over a few hours, but the lagna changes roughly every two hours, so it is the most sensitive to time. An astrologer can help refine an uncertain birth time.

What do the numbers in the chart mean?

In a North Indian chart the houses stay in fixed positions: the top centre diamond is always the 1st house, and the houses run anticlockwise. The number in each house is the sign it holds, from 1 (Aries) to 12 (Pisces).

Why is my sign different from the one in Western astrology?

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, measured against the fixed stars, while Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons. The two are now about 24° apart (the ayanamsa), so many people find their Vedic sign is one sign earlier.
