What is a nakshatra?
The 27 nakshatras divide the zodiac into segments of 13°20′, each with its own ruling planet, deity, symbol and temperament. Your birth nakshatra, or janma nakshatra, is the one the Moon occupied when you were born.
Each nakshatra has four padas (quarters) of 3°20′. The nakshatra is used to choose the first syllable of a name, to begin the Vimshottari dasha sequence, and in Kundli matching.

Frequently asked questions
What is a pada?
Each nakshatra is divided into four padas of 3°20′. The pada refines the qualities of the nakshatra and is traditionally linked to a starting syllable for naming.
What does the gana mean?
Each nakshatra belongs to one of three ganas, Deva (gentle), Manushya (balanced) or Rakshasa (intense). It describes natural disposition and is one of the kootas in matching. No gana is better than another.
What if I don't know my exact time of birth?
Use the closest time you know. The Moon sign and nakshatra usually stay the same over a few hours, but the lagna changes roughly every two hours, so it is the most sensitive to time. An astrologer can help refine an uncertain birth time.
