What is Manglik dosha?

A chart is called Manglik when Mars is placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. We check these houses counted both from the lagna and from the Moon, as most North Indian astrologers do.

This is a very common placement, and the classical texts describe many conditions that soften or cancel it, such as Mars in its own sign or Jupiter's aspect on Mars. We show each commonly cited condition and whether it applies to your chart.

Is being Manglik a problem for marriage?

Not on its own. It describes how Mars's energy may show up in close partnership. It is commonly balanced when both partners have a similar placement, and cancellations apply in many charts. An astrologer reads it with the rest of both charts.

Why do different calculators give different answers?

Traditions differ on whether to count from the lagna, the Moon or Venus, and on which cancellations to accept. We show the houses from both the lagna and the Moon and list each cancellation separately, so you can see exactly what applies.

What if I don't know my exact time of birth?

Use the closest time you know. The Moon sign and nakshatra usually stay the same over a few hours, but the lagna changes roughly every two hours, so it is the most sensitive to time. An astrologer can help refine an uncertain birth time.
