What is a mahadasha?
The Vimshottari dasha system divides life into planetary periods (mahadashas) over a 120-year cycle. The sequence starts with the ruler of the nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth, and the Moon's position within it sets how much of the first period remains.
Each mahadasha is divided into nine antardashas (sub-periods), following the same order. Together they help an astrologer understand the timing of themes in your life.

Frequently asked questions
What does the balance at birth mean?
You are born partway through a mahadasha. The balance is the part of that first period still to run, worked out from how far the Moon had travelled through its nakshatra.
Is one mahadasha better than another?
No period is good or bad in itself. How a dasha unfolds depends on where its planet sits in your chart, its strength and its relationships with other planets.
What if I don't know my exact time of birth?
Use the closest time you know. The Moon sign and nakshatra usually stay the same over a few hours, but the lagna changes roughly every two hours, so it is the most sensitive to time. An astrologer can help refine an uncertain birth time.
